As I said at the outset, my poll of Manila taxi drivers is probably not representative of much. Which is just as well for Ping Lacson’s opponents, because the last 46 rides have seen an incredible swing to the former police chief. What should be particularly heartening to Ping is the fact that his supporters are absolutely rock solid. When I suggest that Lacson's standing in the polls suggests that he isn’t going to win, the answer is always: So what? I believe in him and I’m going to vote for him.
Ping is running such a canny campaign – clear issues, plenty of pressing the flesh, clever manoeuvring – that I am sure that, even if the opposition remains split, he is going to poll a lot more than the 10% the pollsters give him. That’s my prediction anyway – with my record, that should be enough kill his campaign stone dead. The totals are: FPJ 18, Gloria 11, Lacson 22, Roco 15, Brother Eddie 2, undecided/won’t vote 13.
