Mehan Garden goes – will Arroceros follow?

Re-elected Mayor of Manila Lito Atienza is wasting no time in returning to his favourite pastime, bulldozing historic sites. Less than a month after his proclamation, the destroyer of the Jai Alai building (still a deserted site years after the famous art deco building was pulled down) and builder of the white elephant “park and ride” carpark is at it again:

AFTER a long-drawn dispute, Manila officials and the National Historical Institute (NHI) have agreed to the construction of a new home for the City Colleges of Manila (CCM) on the grounds of the city's first zoological and botanical garden.

"I see no more impediments," Manila Mayor Jose L. Atienza Jr. told the Inquirer. "This is much needed by students from Manila. Construction could begin right away as soon as the dust of the elections settles," he added.

Mehan may be a lost cause, but the possibility that the Mayor will destroy nearby Arroceros forest park is extremely disturbing. After more than ten years of careful cultivation by an NGO, this small but ecologically diverse refuge by the Pasig river is one of Manila’s best kept secrets. (If you want to get there it couldn’t be easier, either catch the LRT to Central or park your car round the back of the Metropolitan Museum.) Yet a couple of years ago the Mayor was making hopeful noises about getting flattening the park to build a “teachers' dormitory”.

Lito Atienza has done some good things for the city. Plaza Miranda, Plaza Lawton and the upgrading of Roxas Boulevard (forget about the hideous lights for a moment) are all initiatives he can be proud of. However, none of these will count for anything if he destroys beautiful Arroceros – one of the last patches of green in central Manila (and, incidentally, last year declared an archaelogical site by the National Museum).

Atienza seems a smart guy. Let’s hope he is also concerned about how he is going to be remembered in history.
