Speaking of well kept secrets, we visited one of my favorite spots in Manila yesterday, the Lopez Museum. If, like me, the sands of your your patience for museums can run out quickly, the Lopez museum is perfect. The museum owns the largest collection of Juan Luna paintings in the world as well as many other Philippine grand masters (including Hidalgo’s beautiful “En el Jardin”, pictured above). It really is a treat to see them in such comfortable and intimate surroundings – the two times we have visited the museum we have been almost the only people there.
The current exhibition involves contemporary artists reinterpreting the work of the great masters in the collection. It’s hard to predict how you will react to these (I liked the video based on Hidalgo’s sketches, but was less keen on the reproduction of Luna’s works on shells), but they do raise questions about the works, enabling you to see them through another’s eyes. Even if you absolutely hate the reinterpretations, they are side by side with the originals and no time spent in such company can be entirely wasted.
Details of the collections, address, etc are all on the site.
love that "secret" place too.
last time i was there, there were many students "forced" by their teachers to researched in that "boring" museum
you should've seen those students perfuctorily browsing through the voluminous collections :(
