Seems to me that by killing Zarqawi the americans may have inadvertently strenghtened the insurgency (in the long term). Many in the iraqi resistance never liked zarqawi as his merciless killing of innocent civilians was actually turning iraqis off to the cause. Now that Zarqawi is gone the insurgents can consolidate and unite; the divisive thorn in their side has been removed.


I agree. An interesting question is what happens to the $25 million reward the Americans promised for information leading to his capture or death? It's not impossible that Zarqawi's death was set up by bin Laden's group -- in which case the Americans will be funding the leader of al-Quaida.
